Emu Oil:  Healing Acne the Natural Way

By Jennifer Craigan

Can emu oil help those with acne? More American, European and Australian doctors are beginning to believe that it does. Acne is one of the most common skin issues in the United States, and affects all ages, races and genders.

Emu oil research

Several American medical schools, including Indiana University of Medicine have conducted research on emu oil over the last several years and have found that this oil consists of numerous health properties that are beneficial to one’s skin. The makeup of emu oil is almost 100 percent triglyceride lipid. Triglycerides (a type of fatty compound) are abundant in human skin lipids, meaning that the composition of fatty acids in human skin is very similar to that of emu oil. This makes the absorption of emu oil into human skin faster and more effective.

The documentation on the anti-inflammatory properties of emu oil, as compared by medical researchers in Australia to a number of leading inflammatory products on the market, shows that emu oil excels above other commercial products. Registered pharmacist Kristi Tomlin acknowledges that the main problem with anti-inflammatory products currently on the market is their side effects. Tomlin said, "The oral anti-inflammatory eventually causes stomach discomfort and irritation, which in turn leads to other problems." She continued, "For those able to endure this irritation, the next problem is that it eventually stops working. The patient builds a tolerance for the medication, leaving it ineffective." Topical applications, too, leave much to be desired. "Most of the topical applications which require no prescription use an ingredient derived from a Mexican pepper. Although the warmth it produces contributes to relief, these products often irritate and even burn the skin," Tomlin said.

Dermatologists say that the majority of people suffering from acne do not seek medical treatment and that many young people just live with their acne hoping they will grow out of it. In the meantime, say psychologists, many a young person’s face is being scarred which in turn can negatively affect their self-confidence.

There is a growing number of doctors who, through research, are changing their mind regarding the use of antibiotics to treat acne. Several medical researchers, including David J. Margolis, MD, PhD of London, England are concerned with the downside to antibiotics through its consistent use for the treatment of acne.

The research findings of David J. Margolis, MD, PhD; Whitney P. Bowe, BS; Ole Hoffstad, MA and Jesse A. Berlin, ScD are as follows:

Long term use of antibiotic in the treatment of acne is resulting in either of two common infectious illnesses - that of upper respiratory tract infections or urinary tract infections (URTI). Of 118,496 individuals with acne (age range, 15-35 years) who were identified in the General Practice Research Database, 84,977 (71.7 percent) received a topical or oral antibiotic (tetracyclines, erythromycin, or clindamycin) for treatment of their acne and 33,519 (28.3 percent) did not. This group of medical doctors observed within the first year that 18,281 (15.4 percent) of the patients with acne had at least 1 URTI, and within that year, the odds of a URTI developing among those receiving antibiotic treatment were 2.15 times greater than among those who were not receiving antibiotic treatment.

How emu oil helps heal acne

There are many reasons why emu oil is developing an international reputation and a keen American following. Why would emu oil be considered beneficial in the case of acne? American and Australian researchers have discovered that this oil is anti-inflammatory, thus it reduces swelling in the tissues. It is also bacteriostatic, which means that it does not promote the growth of bacteria. This is very important for those suffering from mild to advanced stages of acne. Many individuals have skin that is so sensitive that only hypoallergenic products can be tolerated. Emu oil can be considered hypoallergenic since it does not irritate the skin or have any known side effects – one of its hallmarks.

Dermatologists are beginning to recommend the use of emu oil for their patients because of its ability to help control or alleviate acne. These doctors say that emu oil has no negative side effects, whether it is used frequently or infrequently. Those who have seen their acne clear up said it took from a week to one month.

Medical researchers have found that emu oil is non-comedogenic (does not clog pores), whether it is used infrequently or on a regular basis.

Emu oil also contains vitamin A, a known antioxidant, which helps repair damaged skin and help prevent free radicals in the body. Emu oil also consists of linoleic acid, which is a cell regenerator.

Many people with acne are finding that emu oil is not only helping with the elimination of their acne, but it goes a step further in helping to fade red marks, and in healing inflamed or sore pimples. Some report that after only a week or two, they begin to see a smoothing out of discoloration and scarring, while their skin feels moisturized and nourished. According to Dr. A. Zemtsov of Texas Tech University, "It has been proven and documented that the claims about the oil - penetrating, emulsifying, non-comedogenic, non-irritating, and highly moisturizing - are true."

Vitamin E added

Some people wonder why it is necessary to add vitamin E to emu oil, if it is similar to our skin’s makeup. Unless vitamin E is added to even the purest grade of emu oil, it would only have a shelf life from about one week to a month. Thus vitamin E prolongs shelf life. Additionally, because of the transdermal effects of emu oil, the vitamin E is carried beneath the skin’s surface to help with healing and repair at the cellular level.

Can an all-natural diet help acne?

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne is not caused by any type of food you eat. Dermatologists have differing opinions on the importance of diet in avoiding or controlling acne. However, one thing is certain: they agree that a strict diet by itself will not clear your skin once you have acne.

The purity of emu oil

One may ask upon what premise or benchmark are medical researchers basing their findings about the purity of emu oil? To answer this question, it must first be understood that emu oil is pure because of the all-natural diet of the emu, which is natural grains free from steroids or hormones.

Doctor G.R. Hobday of Australia revealed that he had tests "performed on the emu oil which included tests for bacteria content, and found that in its pure state it grew no organisms."

Similar research on the antibacterial quality of emu oil was conducted by Karen Davis of Outback Emuzing Ranch in British Columbia, Canada. Davis, a medical technologist who specializes in biochemistry and microbiology, tested emu oil for anaerobic bacteria, fungus, yeast, salmonella, shigella, staphylococcus, streptococcus, and E. coli. According to Davis, "No growth was reported for any of these bacteria or fungi."

SKIN CARE TIPS

DAILY SKIN CARE

WITH EMU OIL &

EMU OIL LOTIONS

AND FACIAL PRODUCTS

For the ultimate in skin care, we suggest the following regimen to keep your skin healthy and vibrant.

Facial Skin Wellness

Each morning and evening, gently cleanse face with emu oil soap, rinse, and pat dry.

In the morning, after cleansing with emu oil soap, apply Reflection Skin Moisturizer. Allow to soak into the skin well before applying makeup.

In the evening, after cleansing with emu oil soap, apply Reflection Skin Rejuvenating Serum and, for intense moisturizing of overly dry skin, apply Reflection Skin Moisturizer as well. By applying either, or both, it gives your skin the opportunity to absorb the product and nourish itself while you sleep.

Once a week, or once every other week, gently cleanse your face with emu oil soap and apply Pure Refined Emu Oil covered by a moist warm cloth for about five minutes. This application is similar to a hot oil treatment for your hair. The warm moist cloth keeps the emu oil fully liquefied and enhances the penetration properties of the oil. By following this regimen, you will begin to feel the difference in your skin. In a very short time, wrinkles should begin to diminish and your skin should become very soft, smooth, and supple.

For Over-All Skin Care

Bathe daily with emu oil soap and/or Body Wash and gently pat the skin dry. Immediately, apply Royal Perfection Hand & Body Lotion or Unique Skin Crème to your entire body and allow it to be absorbed.

For troubled or extreme dry spots on the skin, apply a small amount of Pure Refined Emu Oil 3 times per day. Gently rub the oil into the skin. Skin Doctor or Skin Care Therapy may be used for those who suffer with serious dry skin conditions such as psoriasis or Eczema. We have found that different products give varying degrees of results depending on a particular person's chemical makeup.

Pure Refined Emu Oil is a premier, all natural substance, which hydrates, protects, and replenishes the skin. The HealthyBody Company is convinced that emu oil is a tissue nutrient that actually feeds the skin and makes it healthier and more wholesome.
